I prefer both ullaqey. As others have pointed out, coloring in comics hasn't always been done well in America. Some of the problem has been poor printing techniques. Some of the problem has been coloring art that should have stayed black and white. The best example of this is Bernie Wrightson. DC did a volume of Wrightson's Swamp Thing comics in B W from his original pencils. The book was drop dead gorgeous. Wrightson's work is too delicate with intricate details and shading to be colored. Coloring his work just muddies the art. (BTW, Dark Horse made this mistake again, when they colored his City of Others art.) It wasn窶冲 until anthologies like Creepy and Eerie came out that American窶冱 really appreciated B W comics.There are a few manga series I would love to see in color, based on the few color pages I have seen. Xxxholic is the prime example here. I think the B W artwork for this series is marvelous, but those color pages cause me to drool like a toddler before breakfast. The color palette CLAMP has chosen for this series is so beautiful and compliments the feel of the series perfectly. I also like Urasawa窶冱 muted watercolor pages in Pluto. Again, they capture the subtle, quiet, emotional landscape of the manga.I agree most American comic readers think that color in comics is as given as the fact their printed on paper. They don窶冲 understand the color should be given the same consideration as plot, characterization, and inking. Most don窶冲 want to take the time to establish an appropriate color palette to fit the feel and emotions of the story. It窶冱 a shame, because you miss an added layer of nuance to the comic.I look forward to your article on the subject.Ed Sizemore
